Search

Global Search looks through your whole library at once: titles, PDF text, notes, tasks, folders and tags. Inside an open document, “Find in Document” helps.

Device

Opening Global Search #

In any area, tap the magnifying glass at the top right. A search bubble opens below it with the field “Search files, tasks, notes”. As you type, the bubble shows a preview with up to four results per category.

Case and accents don’t matter. If you enter several words, all of them must appear.

  • If you switch areas while Search is open, your search term and results come along.
  • The ✕ in the field first clears the search term; a second tap closes Search. Tapping next to the bubble or on the magnifying glass again also closes it.
  • While Nexnor reads in new or changed PDFs, Search shows the progress, for example “3 of 12 documents indexed”.
TipWith a hardware keyboard, open Search with ⌘K.

All results and categories #

Tap “Show All Results” in the bubble, or the Search key on the keyboard, to see the complete list. It temporarily replaces the area; whatever was open there stays as it was. The list shows up to 60 results per category.

In the results, your search words are shown in bold with a yellow background. Results are grouped into these categories:

  • Documents – titles and tags of PDFs, notes and text documents, the content of notes and text documents, and the descriptions of your documents.
  • PDF text – matches in the text of PDF pages, including recognised text on scanned pages, each with document and page.
  • Notes – titles and text of notes.
  • Tasks – title, note and tags of tasks, subtasks and tasks from text documents, including completed ones. Completed results show “Completed”, subtasks name their main task; both have their own icon.
  • Text anchors – passages that tasks are linked to. If the task is already listed under “Tasks”, its anchor isn’t shown again.
  • Folders and Tags – by name.
NoteContent in the trash is not shown.

Jumping to a match #

Tap a result to close Search and go straight there:

  • Document, note or text document: opens in the Workspace.
  • PDF text: Nexnor opens the page, scrolls to the first match and highlights every occurrence of your search words on that page in yellow; the spot briefly flashes orange.
  • Task or text anchor: Nexnor opens the document at the place the task is linked to; for a subtask, at the place of its main task.
  • Folder or tag: opens “Files” with that selection.
NoteOn scanned pages too, Nexnor highlights the match in the recognised text in yellow.

Find in Document #

To search only the open document, tap the name of the active tab and choose “Find in Document” from the document menu. Enter at least two characters; the list shows each match with page and an excerpt. Tap a match to close the list and centre the spot.

NoteThis searches the text of PDF pages, recognised text on scanned pages, your text boxes and tables. Nexnor highlights matches on PDF pages in yellow, but not matches in text boxes and tables.
TipWith a hardware keyboard, open it with ⌘F; Esc works as “Cancel”. In text documents a search bar appears instead, see Text documents.

Text recognition on scanned pages #

If a PDF contains pages without real text – such as a scan or a photographed document – Nexnor recognises the text automatically. Text recognition runs on your device; nothing is uploaded.

You’ll then find the recognised text in Global Search under “PDF text”. You can also select it on the page and turn it into a task with “Attach to-do”.

  • Check the status: document menu › “Inspector” › “Text recognition”. It shows, for example, “OCR waiting”, “OCR in progress” with the page count, “OCR completed” or “OCR failed”.
  • Start again: Tap the status and choose “Retry text recognition”.
