External Documents

Nexnor opens PDF, Markdown and TXT files from the Files app without importing them. To edit one, you create a copy in your library; the original stays unchanged.

Open a file without importing #

External documents open in their own tab in the workspace. The file stays where it is and doesn’t appear in Files.

  • In Files or in the workspace, tap the folder icon at the top left › “Open Document…”
  • In the workspace, “+” in the tab bar › “Open Document…”, or “Open Document…” in the empty workspace
  • In the Files app or another app, hand the file to Nexnor using “Open in”
  • With a keyboard: ⌘O
NoteNexnor opens PDF, Markdown and TXT files; other plain-text files, such as files ending in .log, open as TXT. Encrypted or password-locked PDFs are rejected. Files you send to Nexnor through its share extension, on the other hand, are imported into the library.
TipTo try things out, the folder icon at the top left offers three examples: “Open Example PDF” (a one-page PDF that opens as “Nexnor Example.pdf” for viewing only), “Open Markdown Example” and “Open TXT Example”. You can edit the two text examples straight away; to keep your changes, use “Save As…” or “Copy into Nexnor”.

Reading #

An external PDF is open for reading only; the top shows “External file · View only”. You can scroll, zoom with two fingers, select and copy text, and turn pages with the arrows at the bottom. Tap the tab name › “Find in Document” (⌘F) and Nexnor highlights all matches in yellow and jumps to the first one. “Print…” in the tab menu (⌘P) prints the PDF.

Highlighting, commenting, drawing, inserting and “Edit Text” are available once you work in the Nexnor copy. You can already add tasks while reading: select text › “Task”, or “Task on This Page” in the bar at the top. When you save the task, Nexnor copies the PDF into your library and links the task to its spot.

External Markdown and TXT files show source and preview like text documents, but don’t accept input. Instead of the formatting bar, they show “External file: formatting is available in the Nexnor copy.” with the “Edit in Nexnor” button. Any edit, such as the “Edit in Nexnor” pencil at the top, a formatting command, a marking or “New Task”, leads to the “Edit in Nexnor” sheet.

NoteProtected or signed PDFs show a lock. They can only be read; copying into Nexnor and tasks are not available.

Copy into Nexnor #

To edit, you create a copy in your Nexnor library. The original stays unchanged, even if you change the copy later.

How to

  1. In the external PDF, tap “Edit in Nexnor” at the top (also in the tab menu or with ⌘S).
  2. Confirm with “Edit in Nexnor” in the sheet.
  3. The copy replaces the tab. The top shows “Nexnor copy opened · Original unchanged”.
  • PDF: The copy contains all pages with their existing PDF annotations and is named after the file. It is stored at the top level of Files. Text recognition starts for scanned pages.
  • Task added while reading: moves into the copy together with its spot and its card.
  • Markdown and TXT: “Create copy and edit” creates the copy, replaces the tab and continues the step you chose there. “Copy into Nexnor” (Text Tools or tab menu), by contrast, creates a separate library copy with name, folder and tags; under “Version to Copy” you choose “Current Draft” or “Read Original Again”, and the external tab stays open. Text and available images are included.
NoteEach copy counts as a document; without Nexnor Pro you can have 10 documents. If you switch to another app while copying, the transfer stops. Use “Resume Transfer” later to continue without creating a duplicate copy.
TipIf you open an original you already copied, Nexnor shows your copy right away. In the copy’s document menu, “View Original Only” opens the original for reading. If the match isn’t certain, the “Choose File Association” sheet asks whether to open an existing copy or view the file separately.
