Descriptions

Descriptions sum up briefly what a file is about and help you find files faster. Apple Intelligence creates them on your device, or you write them yourself.

Device

What descriptions are #

A description consists of a short description shown below the title in the list and grid, an optional detailed description, and a document type such as invoice, contract or offer.

Apple Intelligence reads the text of the pages – for scanned PDFs, the recognised text – and works right on this device; no data is uploaded. Descriptions are stored only on this device and never change the file’s name or content.

Below each file’s title you can see its status:

LabelMeaning
“No description yet”The file hasn’t been described yet.
“AI · …”created by Apple Intelligence, with the document type
“Own · …”written or edited by you
“Update Available”The file has changed since it was described.
“New Suggestion”Apple Intelligence has created a suggestion for your own description.
“Queued”, “Reading content …”The description is being created.
NoteDescriptions with Apple Intelligence require Nexnor Pro. You can write your own descriptions without Pro.

Creating descriptions #

To describe a single file, choose “Describe with Apple Intelligence” in its … menu, or use the same button in the info pane. For many files at once:

How to

  1. Tap “Describe All Here …” (sparkles icon) at the top. This covers all files currently shown. Alternatively, select files with “Select” and tap “Describe” at the bottom.
  2. The “Create Descriptions” sheet counts how many files have no description, are outdated, current or your own. “Update Outdated Descriptions” decides whether outdated ones are recreated.
  3. Tap the button with the number, for example “Describe 5”.
  • A banner at the bottom shows “Creating descriptions” with the progress. “Stop” cancels; finished descriptions are kept.
  • When it’s done, “Descriptions done” appears. “Retry” tries again for files that didn’t work.
  • If Nexnor was closed while working, “Describing was interrupted” appears with “Resume” and “Discard”.
NoteWith Nexnor Pro. Current descriptions and your own descriptions are left unchanged when you describe several files.

Editing descriptions #

Choose “Write Description” or “Edit Description” in the … menu, or tap “Edit” in the info pane. Enter a “Short Description” (at most two lines in the list), optionally a “Detailed Description” and the “Document Type”, then tap “Save”.

Nexnor never overwrites your own or edited descriptions automatically. If you have Apple Intelligence describe such a file again, the info pane shows “New suggestion from Apple Intelligence”: tap “Accept” or “Keep Current”.

In the info pane, “Regenerate” or “Update Description” recreates an existing description. The … menu next to it offers “Remove Description” and, after you have accepted a suggestion, “Restore Previous Description”.

NoteWriting your own description works without Nexnor Pro.

Requirements #

For descriptions with Apple Intelligence you need:

  • Nexnor Pro,
  • iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later on a device that supports Apple Intelligence,
  • Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings and ready,
  • Apple Intelligence support for the language Nexnor runs in (English or German),
  • a file that contains readable text.
NoteIf a requirement is missing, “Describe with Apple Intelligence” is dimmed and the info pane gives the reason, for example “Turn on Apple Intelligence in Settings to create descriptions.” If a file can’t be described, it shows a note such as “No usable text”. Text documents (Markdown and TXT) are not described.
